This is the iPad version of Baxter Database of Violin & Bow Makers. It contains information about over 21,500 instrument and bow makers. Included are makers from the very earliest times, to contemporary times. If you have ever purchased books about violin makers, you know how expensive they are, and how many there are. To me, the most important data is: who the maker was, when and where did he/she work, and what is the value of the instrument? Please understand that not all data is known for all makers. If only a name and place is known, that’s all you’ll see. For the better known makers, values will be shown, as well as teachers, cities and countries worked in, and in many cases pictures of the instruments and/or labels are also included. The values shown are usually prices paid at auctions. Because there are so many variables to be considered, only the low and high auction values are shown in order to give you an idea of the range of possible values. Retail values are always higher than auction values. The data is searchable, and sortable. This database is NOT intended to be a source of identifying individual instruments. It provides data about the maker and provides clues about labels found inside. One last note: There are literally millions of violins found in attics and basements bearing the name “Antonius Stradivarius” or “Joseph Guarnerius” or “Nicola Amatus”. Most are factory made student violins. If you think you have found a genuine Stradivarius…you have not.
